Information strategy

This information strategy supports the implementation of the profile “Information fusion from databases, sensors and simulations” and projects within the framework of the profile.

Aims and goals

The overall aim with the information strategy is to have a thorough plan for the spreading of information about the profile. Information spread internally serves to facilitate communication within the profile, to facilitate synergy between projects/scenarios, and to stimulate the generation of new ideas. Information spread externally serves to inform other organizations as well as the public about the profile. An important goal of the external information is to create awareness about the fact that the University of Skövde has a healthy high quality research environment that is successful both in attracting substantial external funding from The Knowledge Foundation and in establishing active cooperation with industry.

Target groups

The information strategy has an internal target group as well as an external target group. The internal target group consists of two parties: the profile participants and relevant members of their organizations. The external target group includes the international research community, Swedish industry, research financers, as well as society and the public sector. It is crucial to disseminate information about the ongoing research and overall development of the research profile and the University to both groups.

Conversely, the research faculty will continuously monitor published materials on the overall development of ongoing research in the field of information fusion and closely related research, but also study publications in trade journals, magazine, and other types of media.

The main goals of the internal information are:

  • To gain support for the profile and projects  within the participating organizations.
  • To spread project results, including detailed information about developed solutions, methods, etc.
  • To co-ordinate projects and to achieve synergy effects between projects which are carried out within the framework of the profile, and between the profile and associated projects (projects with some relevance for, but not conducted within the profile).
  • To inform about planned activities.
  • To get feedback about the profile and ongoing projects, and get ideas for new projects.
  • To encourage researchers in the profile to explore opportunities for research leading to innovations.
  • To show role models of spin-off enterprises formed from other research profiles funded by the Knowledge Foundation or from other research environments in Sweden and internationally.
  • To inform about support for patentable research and business development.

The aims of the external information are to:

  • Disseminate information about the profile projects, partners, etc.
  • Spread information about results of the profile projects to potential users.
  • Highlight the scientific questions addressed in the profile and the projects.
  • Disseminate scientific findings.
  • Inform of potential opportunities for establishing spin-off enterprises
  • Highlight opportunities for research and graduate studies at University of Skövde.
  • Highlight opportunities for cooperation between industry and the University within the profile or as associated projects with other forms of external funding.
  • Market the University of Skövde as a university with a strong and thriving research environment.

The message content

The internal target group receives information about the start, goal, and contents of the profile as well as the partners participating in the profile. Financial information is also made available. Continuously, detailed information that shows the progress of the profile will made available, for example about (new) projects, new profile participants, and information about individual projects and their progress. The project participants may receive more detailed information than others in the organizations.

The external target group receives information about the goal and contents of the profile and projects, contributing partners as well as expected results. As the profile progresses, comprehensive information about the progress of the profile and projects will be made more widely available, as well as concrete research results and results from industrial evaluations, as they are obtained.

The internal target group receives more detailed information than the external target group. However, much of the information that is primarily aimed at the external target group (such as the website) also gives interested parties in the internal target group an overview of the profile and projects. For this reason, we first list the channels for external communication, followed by a list of specific channels for internal communication.

Communication channels

Main communication channels for the external target groups

General

  • An official website for the profile. A website has been established, www.infofusion.se, containing news and information of general disposition as well as background information about the profile and projects. It is open for everyone who can read English, however, some information may be available only in Swedish (such as popular scientific articles intended for the Swedish press and industry). A link to the website of the Knowledge Foundation is available on the website. The website has a public part and a password protected part for participants in the profile.
  • Information about the profile submitted to the Knowledge Foundation for publication on their website.
  • Press releases at the start of profile and projects and at other occasions for the purpose of informing the public. The University has recently formed a press group to support contact work with the press. We have already had extensive coverage in the press (newspapers, radio, TV) surrounding the interview with the international expert group from The Knowledge Foundation, the ensuing decision from The Knowledge Foundation to fund the profile, our kick-off meeting with the partner companies for the build-uip phase of the profile, and the overwhelming support form partner companies in signing agreements with the university to participate in the research profile.
  • Popular science articles in the local, national and international press. The plans for the research profile have already been the subject of a two-page article in “Computer Sweden” (8 December 2003), one of the most visible scientific newspapers in Sweden. Other articles include “Elektroniktidningen” and “Elektronik i Norden”.
  • Popular science lectures inside and outside the University. Since several years, University of Skövde arranges its own monthly series of popular science lectures, open to the public.
  • Articles in”Perspective”, a popular science periodical published by the University. News about the Information Fusion research profile will be featured in each issue.
  • Presentations about the profile at meetings or seminars of various organisations. Examples of such presentations so far:
    • Invited overview presentation and paper about the Information Fusion Research Profile at the VINNOVA Workshop on Intelligent Sensor Networks, Stockholm, 29 September 2004.
    • Network meeting of ATC (Automation Technology Cluster of West Sweden) in June 2004.
    • Study visit by  ISA (Invest in Sweden Agency) to Skövde in March 2004
    • Visit to the FOI Stockholm Information Fusion Group at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), Stockholm, 12 February 2004.

Industry oriented

  • Workshops and seminars organized for profile and project partners, as well as for interested external parties. Established partner networks are used as channels for invitations. Workshops, seminars and collaboration days may be arranged either at industry sites or at the University.
  • Exhibitions: Dissemination of information by presentations, information leaflets, brochures, etc., at exhibitions and other occasions where profile participants participate.
  • Publication in trade journals and magazines, national as well as international.

Research community oriented

  • Conferences: Acting as hosts for relevant conferences and organizing new conferences of interest (supported internally as well as by our partner networks).
    • The profile is planning to bid for the international FUSION conference to be organized 2009 in Skövde. This would be after the mid-term review of the profile, which we feel is a good timing. The conference was held in Stockholm in 2004, hence proposing a venue in Sweden sooner than 2009 may not be successful. Should the 2009 bid not be successful, then bids for the 2010 or 2011 conference would still be possible.
    • The University of Skövde is hosting the SNART Real-Time in Sweden conference (RTiS 2005) on August 16-17, 2004, with a special session on real-time databases and support for information fusion in real-time and embedded systems.
  • Networks: Dissemination of information within the framework of existing research networks, for example, by presentations on the Mechatronics meeting, or through participation in feature articles in newsletters, etc.
  • Publication in scientific journals and conferences according to usual academic tradition. Publications will be distributed to the project partners. Scientific publications are listed at www.his.se/infofusion/publications. In addition, a number of papers have been submitted to The Eighth International Conference on Information Fusion (FUSION 2005), Philadelphia, PA, USA, July 25 - 28, 2005

Communication channels specifically for the internal target groups

  • A server for the profile documents. All of the profile participants have access to the server by use of passwords. Documentation, information material, etc., related to the profile and the projects are stored on the server.
  • An electronic newsletter. The profile has started to publish an electronic newsletter, so far 8 in a 12-month period, which is sent to the industrial partners and is published on the website.
  • Meetings with the executive committee and the reference group, which are documented by minutes stored on the document server. The executive committee currently meets weekly. The reference group is planned to meet twice per year.
  • Meetings with the project groups for detailed technical discussions and operational work. These will be documented by meeting memoranda stored on the document server.
  • Meetings with the profile group for co-ordination, dialogue and synergistic effects. Presentations of the profile and projects and other information material will be stored on the server and/or distributed by e-mail.
  • Telephone- and videoconferences for quick updates and co-ordination of activities, mainly within project groups.
  • Generation of internal support and spreading of information in the participating companies about the profile and its projects through their established channels, for example internal newspapers, group meetings etc.
  • An annual seminar for the entire profile group (including new potential industrial partners).
    • A first seminar was held on August 21st 2003, during which the entire initial profile group (from interested companies and research groups) met.
    • A kick-off for the build-up phase of the profile was held on September 15th, 2004. This one-day seminar was used to bring the industrial partners together again. Important differences with respect to the seminar in 2003 were that this time, we knew that the application was approved, and some more partners had joined the profile. The seminar received extensive attention in local newspapers, and notes from the seminar are published on the website.
  • Seminars, workshops and kick-off-meetings for individual projects within the profile for the purpose of informing different interested parties, primarily inside the participating companies. These may be arranged, alternatingly, either at company sites or at the University.
  • Internal support and information dissemination within the University through group meetings, research seminars etc. A number of internal seminars/presentations have been held, with presentation material published on the website.
